Factory Butte — BLM Dispersed Camping
Factory Butte is a stark, flat-topped butte rising out of the Mancos Shale badlands near Caineville and Hanksville, Utah. The surrounding BLM land is open for dispersed camping on the flats and along the dirt tracks off Factory Butte Road. There are no facilities, no water, no shade and no fire rings to speak of. What you get is silence, moon-like terrain and some of the best stargazing in the state. Bring your own water and pack out your trash.
Don’t underestimate the ground. The bentonite clay turns to slick, axle-deep gumbo when wet, and a rain shower can strand even a capable rig for days. Check the forecast and leave early if clouds build. The area is also open to OHV use, so expect some engine noise on weekends. Spring and fall are best. Summer heat is brutal with zero cover. Confirm current rules with the BLM Richfield Field Office before heading out.
