Muddy Creek Canyon Road — San Rafael Swell Slot to Factory Butte via Muddy Creek

Slot canyon mud and badlands — earn every mile.

Difficult

Muddy Creek earns its name every time it rains, but in dry conditions it’s one of the most rewarding and underrated canyon drives in all of Utah. The route threads through the San Rafael Swell’s southern section via the actual creek drainage — meaning you’re in the water at multiple crossings, grinding through soft mud benches, and watching canyon walls close in to near-slot width at points before opening onto the bleached badlands near Hanksville. Factory Butte looms on the eastern end like a stranded mesa from another planet. The canyon itself is BLM-managed and sees a fraction of the traffic that Goblin Valley State Park pulls just to the north.

This is a genuine technical challenge and should not be attempted when rain is anywhere in the forecast — flash floods in this canyon are no joke and there is no escape route mid-canyon. A capable 4WD with a locker, good ground clearance, and a snorkel if you have one is the smart call. Multiple creek crossings reach axle-depth in normal conditions. Best season is May through June and again September through October. Hanksville is your last fuel and water stop heading west; Green River heading east. No permit required. Satellite communicator mandatory on this one.
