Parque Nacional Los Glaciares Brazo Rico Backcountry Access
Remote glacial wilderness access through Patagonia.
The Brazo Rico route penetrates Los Glaciares’ eastern wilderness where few tourists venture, following estancia roads toward the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers. You’ll ford the Río Mitre multiple times—spring runoff makes this a serious undertaking that’s turned back plenty of rigs. The track deteriorates past Estancia Alice, becoming rough 4WD-only terrain through lenga forest with glacier views that’ll stop you cold.
This is difficult territory requiring lifted 4WD with recovery gear and self-sufficiency for 3-4 days. Weather changes without warning—summer storms can dump snow even in January. Park permits required and rangers check vehicles at the checkpoint. No cell service once you leave El Calafate behind. Best December through March when river levels drop and roads firm up. Tackle this route and you’ll see Patagonia’s glacial wilderness the way few people ever do—raw, remote, and absolutely unforgettable.
