Chemin de la Rivière Péribonka — Réserve faunique Ashuapmushuan Wilderness Circuit
Boreal river country with real mud and real silence.
The Péribonka River is Louis Hémon country — the same waterway that inspired Maria Chapdelaine — and the forestry road that shadows its upper reaches pushes you into one of the least-visited corners of the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. Starting near Saint-Félicien, the circuit climbs northeast into the reserve through spruce and tamarack, crossing several unnamed tributaries before reaching the upper river flats where black bear and woodland caribou share the same boggy ground. The river crossings are legitimate obstacles after spring melt — mid-June can still put hub-deep water across the road at the two main fords. Expect eroded clay sections, washboard gravel, and the odd blowdown across the track in shoulder season.
This is a legitimate high-clearance 4WD route — a lifted truck or a body-on-frame SUV with a locker handles it fine under dry summer conditions, but soft axle clearance vehicles will get swallowed in the seasonal mud. Carry extra fuel out of Saint-Félicien because there is nothing inside the reserve. Water from the river is abundant but filter everything. A ZEC permit is required to access the reserve interior — purchase it at the entrance station. Best window is late July through September. Cell service drops dead within 10 km of the entrance gate. What you get out here is complete silence, serious boreal fishing, and the kind of sky that reminds you how small your rig actually is.
