Camino de los Pioneros Santa Cruz Patagonia

Scottish pioneer wagon route to Lago Viedma

Moderate

This forgotten pioneer route follows sheep wagon ruts carved by Scottish settlers in the 1920s, winding through golden grasslands where guanacos still outnumber tourists. The track splits off Ruta 40 south of El Calafate, threading between weathered estancia buildings and abandoned homesteads before reaching the shores of Lago Viedma. Key waypoint is the ruins of Estancia La Anita, where Patagonian rebels made their last stand in 1921 during the worker uprisings. The final section to Bahía Túnel requires crossing multiple arroyos and navigating around massive granite erratics left by retreating glaciers.

Moderate difficulty with some technical creek crossings and deep sand pockets during summer. High-clearance 4WD essential for the arroyo crossings, but stock vehicles can handle most sections. October through April provides the best conditions, though expect Patagonian winds exceeding 100 km/h. Carry extra fuel — nearest services are 120 kilometers back in El Calafate. The reward is camping beside ice-blue Lago Viedma with Cerro Chaltén’s granite spires glowing at sunset, plus the haunting solitude of Patagonia’s forgotten frontier.
