Torres del Paine Circuit Road

Circle Patagonia's towers on forgotten gaucho roads

Difficult

The hidden vehicle route around Torres del Paine follows centuries-old gaucho trails and estancia service roads that most visitors never see, connecting remote sheep ranches on the park’s outer boundaries. The 80-kilometer circuit starts near Estancia Cerro Paine, crosses the Río Paine at a historic ford used by early settlers, and winds through private ranch land where guanacos graze alongside Patagonian horses. The route passes through the abandoned Estancia Río Paine, where stone corrals and shearing sheds tell the story of a century of sheep farming in this harsh landscape.

This is moderate to difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD and experience with river crossings that can rise rapidly during Patagonian storms. Stock vehicles can handle dry conditions, but aggressive tires help in mud and snow. Best driven during summer (December-February), though weather changes without warning any time of year. Private property permissions needed at several estancias — arrange through local guides in Puerto Natales. Camping possible at abandoned estancias with landowner permission. Wind is constant and brutal. Carry extra fuel and food for weather delays.
