Tumbler Ridge Circle Route
Dinosaur tracks and industrial backroads
This loop connects Tumbler Ridge to Hudson’s Hope via industrial roads built for coal and gas extraction, passing the world’s largest trackway of dinosaur footprints at Flatbed Creek. The route climbs through the Monkman Pass area where you’ll cross Belcourt Creek on a Bailey bridge that flexes under weight. Kinuseo Falls thunders 60 meters down a limestone canyon at kilometer 75, accessible via a sketchy side spur that claims oil pans.
Moderate difficulty with some technical creek crossings and loose shale climbs past Murray River. Any 4WD handles most of it, but pack a shovel for muddy sections after rain. Best tackled May through October when industrial traffic keeps roads maintained. Fuel up in Tumbler Ridge — next services are 180 kilometers away. The payoff is solitude among some of Alberta’s most dramatic geology, plus enough dinosaur tracks to make any kid lose their mind.
