Taseko Lakes Mining Road
Gold rush tracks to alpine wilderness
The Taseko Lakes road punches 65 kilometers into some of the most remote country in southern BC, following old mining tracks past turquoise lakes and through stands of lodgepole pine that stretch to the horizon. This route climbs from sagebrush country at 900 meters to alpine meadows above 2000 meters, crossing multiple creek beds and navigating rocky switchbacks that’ll keep you in low range for hours. The road terminates at Taseko Lake, where gold miners once worked claims that are still visible along the shoreline.
Don’t attempt this without serious preparation — it’s expert-level terrain that demands a well-equipped 4WD with recovery gear, extra fuel, and emergency supplies. Creek crossings can be dicey during spring melt, and weather changes fast at elevation. Late summer through early fall offers the best conditions, but even then you might hit snow above treeline. Cell service is non-existent, so bring a satellite communicator. The reward is absolute solitude in country that looks exactly like it did when the first prospectors arrived.
