Carpenter Lake to Tyaughton Creek FSR — South Chilcotin Mountains

Most rigs headed into the South Chilcotin Mountains come up through Gold Bridge, but the Tyaughton Creek FSR route off the north side of Carpenter Lake is the one the locals know. You pick up the FSR near the community of Goldbridge, climb through pine and spruce forests, and follow Tyaughton Creek as it cuts deep into the plateau. The crux hits around the 30-kilometre mark where the road narrows to single-lane shelf road above the creek — loose shale, a tight off-camber corner, and zero guardrail. From there you push through into the Spruce Lake Protected Area, where the mountains open up and you’re looking at genuine Chilcotin wilderness: wildflower meadows, grizzly country, and the kind of silence that’ll reset your brain.

Minimum is a long-travel 4WD with a high-clearance suspension — stock trucks have gotten spanked on that shelf section. The road is typically open late June through mid-October depending on snowpack, but always verify with the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Regional District before you go. Fuel up in Lillooet or Pemberton; there’s nothing out here. Water is abundant from Tyaughton Creek but filter it. No permit required, dispersed camping throughout. Cell service drops to zero shortly after leaving Gold Bridge — satellite communicator is not optional in this terrain.
