Carpenter Lake Logging Road Circuit

Active logging roads above the flooded valley

Moderate

Before BC Hydro flooded the valley for the Bridge River power project, this was prime railway country hauling timber down to the Fraser. Now it’s a maze of active and decommissioned logging roads threading between Carpenter Lake and the Shulaps Range, with the old Pacific Great Eastern Railway grade still visible in places. The route follows the north shore of the reservoir before climbing into the Bendor Range, where bridge crossings over Downton Creek and Marshall Creek test your nerves more than your suspension.

Standard difficulty for anyone comfortable with logging road etiquette — yield to the trucks, monitor radio channels, and carry a good map since GPS gets sketchy in the valleys. Best tackled May through October when the bridges are maintained, though summer means sharing the road with active timber operations. No permits needed, but respect the working forest. Dispersed camping is excellent along the lake, and you’ll find some of BC’s best backcountry fishing without the Whistler crowds. Just remember — the logging trucks have right of way, always.
