Georgia Traverse Trail Section 3 Pine Mountain Ridge
Granite ridgeline expedition for serious rigs only.
The Georgia Traverse Trail’s most challenging section traces Pine Mountain’s spine for 47 miles, navigating granite outcrops, steep ravines, and abandoned logging roads from Roosevelt State Park to Callaway Gardens. This isn’t your weekend warrior route — it’s a serious backcountry commitment that follows ridgelines where Civilian Conservation Corps crews carved roads in the 1930s, now overgrown and punctuated by washouts. The infamous Devil’s Backbone section demands careful navigation around massive granite boulders and across exposed rock slabs that become skating rinks when wet.
Expert-level difficulty requires modified vehicles with serious armor — stock rigs won’t survive the granite punishment. Recovery gear mandatory, along with multiple spare tires and comprehensive repair kit. Best attempted late fall through early spring when rattlesnakes are dormant and creek crossings are manageable. No commercial services for 30+ miles in places. This route separates pretenders from the real deal, offering genuine wilderness solitude and challenging technical driving that’ll test every system on your rig. Come prepared or stay home.
