Forest Road 376 climbs east out of the Talladega National Forest near Hollins, tracing the Hillabee Divide above the gorge of Hillabee Creek — one of the few genuine canyon cuts in the Alabama Piedmont. The route winds through second-growth hardwood and scattered pine, crosses several unnamed creek drainages on low-water concrete fords, and eventually reaches the trailhead approach to Dome Rock, an exposed granite monadnock that stands out dramatically in this otherwise rolling landscape. Views from the dome take in ridgeline after ridgeline of the Talladega Mountains with almost nothing man-made in sight.
This is an easy to moderate run on dry packed dirt and gravel — a stock SUV with reasonable clearance handles it without drama. After heavy rain the creek fords can run knee-deep and the clay shoulders get slick; check conditions with the ranger district beforehand. Gear Rock Campground and Coleman Lake Campground both sit within the district and offer developed camping with water. The season runs year-round but spring and fall offer the clearest air and the most color. No permit required. Anniston or Talladega are your fuel stops. Cell service is spotty at best once you’re deep in the hollows. It’s a quiet, honest piece of southern forest that rewards people who show up.
