Talladega National Forest Forest Road 500-A Red Mountain Iron Ore Circuit
Iron ore mining circuit through Civil War battlegrounds
Red Mountain’s iron ore deposits built Birmingham’s steel empire, and Forest Road 500-A traces the original mining roads through Talladega National Forest. The 18-mile circuit starts near Heflin and winds through steep hollers where Confederate and Union forces skirmished over mineral rights. Expect rocky climbs through exposed shale and sandstone outcroppings, with the steepest technical section at Devil’s Den Gap requiring low-range momentum over loose rock shelves.
This moderate to difficult route demands high-clearance 4WD with skid plates for the sharp limestone ledges. Spring and fall offer the best conditions when creek crossings are manageable and heat isn’t brutal. No permits required, but bring extra water and check with Shoal Creek Ranger District for seasonal closures. The payoff: panoramic views of the Coosa River valley and remnants of 1800s blast furnaces hidden in the timber.
