Talladega National Forest Forest Road 553 High Rock Fire Tower Circuit

Alabama's high country fire tower circuit

Difficult

Forest Road 553 climbs from Cleburne County farmland straight up the Talladega spine, hitting granite outcrops and Depression-era fire towers that once watched for smoke across three states. The route threads between High Rock’s boulder maze and Cheaha’s southern flanks, following ridgeline timber roads through stands of mountain laurel and sourwood. McDill Point’s rock scramble offers the circuit’s most technical challenge — loose granite requires careful tire placement and momentum through the steeper pitches.

Difficult rating due to embedded rock, steep grades, and narrow shelf sections with serious drop-offs. Proper 4WD with skid plates and recovery points recommended — this isn’t mall-crawler terrain. Dry conditions only — Alabama red clay turns these roads into grease when wet. Spring wildflowers justify the punishment, but summer heat makes the exposed ridges brutal. No permits required, dispersed camping allowed at designated sites. Carry extra water and fuel — nearest services are 25 miles down in Lineville.
