McKinney Campground
This large Forest Service campground sprawls along Lake Lanier’s shoreline with a mix of lakefront and wooded sites accommodating everything from tents to big RVs. The campground includes flush toilets, hot showers, and a boat launch, making it popular with weekend warriors, but sites 100-150 up the hill stay quieter and work well for overland rigs. Swimming beach gets packed on summer weekends, but early mornings are peaceful.
Located off Buford Dam Road, about 30 minutes from several Chattahoochee National Forest trail access points. Reservations essential March through October — this place fills up fast. Some sites close in winter, but the campground stays partially open year-round.
