Pine Log Creek Ford Challenge
Cherokee gold country water challenge
Pine Log Creek Ford follows the same water crossings Cherokee gold miners used in the 1830s, where you’ll ford Pine Log Creek at least six times as it winds through the foothills of the North Georgia mountains. The route passes remnants of hydraulic mining operations and stone foundations from the mining camps, including the ruins of Sixes Mill where prospectors once processed creek gravel for gold flakes that still glitter in your headlight beams during night crossings.
Moderate difficulty with seasonal challenges — spring snowmelt and summer thunderstorms can turn fordable crossings into impassable torrents within hours. Stock 4WD handles it during normal conditions, but you’ll want recovery gear and a buddy truck because cell service disappears after the first creek crossing. Best run fall through early spring when water’s low and the mosquitoes take a break. The payoff is solitude in country that looks exactly like it did when Cherokee prospectors first worked these creeks.
