Srinagar-Leh Highway

Kashmir to Ladakh via the roof of the world

Moderate

The Srinagar-Leh Highway cuts through the heart of the Western Himalayas, climbing from the green valleys of Kashmir into the stark moonscape of Ladakh. This 434-kilometer lifeline crosses Zoji La (11,575 feet), where the road clings to cliff faces above thousand-foot drops, then threads through four more high passes including the infamous Fotu La and Namika La. Military convoys share the narrow ribbon of broken tarmac with yaks, while roadside dhabas serve chai to drivers catching their breath in the thin air.

This is a moderate technical route demanding high-clearance vehicles, preferably 4WD for the unpaved sections and emergency situations. Landslides regularly close sections from November through May, making June to September the only reliable window. Carry extra fuel, water, and warm gear — weather turns deadly fast above 10,000 feet. The payoff is crossing one of Earth’s most dramatic mountain transitions, from lush Kashmir to the high desert of Ladakh, passing ancient monasteries and military outposts that mark the edge of the known world.
