Musquacook Lake Tote Road

Technical route to Maine's hidden trophy lake

Difficult

The Musquacook Lake Tote Road is a gnarly 24-mile remnant of Maine’s timber era that punches through the heart of the North Maine Woods to one of the state’s most pristine backcountry lakes. Starting from the Ashland checkpoint, this rutted dirt track immediately challenges drivers with granite ledge climbs, deep mud holes, and creek crossings that’ll test your approach angles. The road follows old timber haul routes through paper company land, passing the ruins of Camp 7 at Mile 16—a 1940s logging camp where the bunkhouse foundation still shows through the alders.

This is solid difficult territory demanding a capable 4WD with skid plates, recovery gear, and patience for the technical sections. Late summer offers the best conditions, but even then expect mud and rocks. You’ll need a North Maine Woods permit and should carry extra fuel since Ashland is your last supply stop. What makes the beating worthwhile is Musquacook Lake itself—gin-clear water surrounded by untouched wilderness, with brook trout that haven’t seen many lures and moose that’ll wade right past your camp at dawn.
