Aroostook River Timber Circuit

The Aroostook River Timber Circuit loops through Maine’s agricultural heartland where endless potato fields meet vast timber holdings along the Aroostook River. This 32-mile route connects active logging roads with farm access tracks, passing abandoned Acadian homesteads and crossing multiple tributaries of the Aroostook system. The highlight is the river crossing at Masardis, where the original timber drive splash dam ruins still stand, and the technical climb up Greenlaw Ridge offering panoramic views across the Aroostook Valley to the Canadian border.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD, but manageable for most capable vehicles during dry conditions. Active logging means heavy truck traffic – travel on weekends for lighter industrial use. Best from late May through October, avoiding spring breakup when roads turn to soup. No permits needed but respect private timber lands and farming operations. Great dispersed camping along river sections with excellent brook trout fishing and abundant wildlife. You’ll experience Maine’s working landscape where timber and agriculture still define the economy.
