Talladega National Forest Forest Road 500 Chinabee Silent Trail Circuit

Technical rocky circuit through Alabama's high country

Difficult

Forest Road 500 carves through some of the most remote backcountry in Talladega National Forest, winding past the ruins of the old Chinabee Settlement and connecting to the Silent Trail system below Cheaha Peak. The route starts innocuously enough near Highway 281, but quickly turns into a technical rocky climb that’ll test your departure angles and diff locks as you navigate house-sized boulders and off-camber ledges. The real prize comes at mile marker 8 where you’ll cross Chinabee Creek — a legitimate water crossing that’s turned more than one overconfident mall crawler into expensive yard art.

This isn’t a Sunday drive — you’ll need real 4WD with decent skid plates and recovery points. The route runs about 12 miles one-way, taking a full day if you stop to explore the settlement ruins and take in views from the ridge overlooks. Best tackled in late spring through early fall when the creek isn’t a raging torrent. No permits needed, but fuel up in Heflin before you start — cell service is nonexistent once you’re committed. The payoff is legit Alabama high country solitude and some of the best dispersed camping spots in the Southeast.
