Potato Range FSR to Deadhorse Meadows — Marble Range Provincial Park

The Marble Range sits northeast of Clinton in the dry interior of BC, and the FSR network threading into its southern flanks delivers some of the most underrated high-clearance driving in the province. Starting off Highway 97 north of Clinton, you pick up the Potato Range FSR and work your way through open grasslands and ponderosa pine before the road tightens and kicks upward through fractured limestone benches. The climb to Deadhorse Meadows gains serious elevation quickly, with loose shale sections, exposed sidehills, and one gnarly switchback sequence that’ll test your spotters. The meadows themselves open up at around 5,800 feet with views across the Fraser Plateau you won’t find on any tourist map.

This route demands a high-clearance 4WD minimum — a lifted rig with all-terrain tires is the honest call. The shale surface gets greasy after rain, and the exposed sidehill sections have real drop-off consequences. No permit required, but the road is unmaintained and conditions vary year to year. Best window is July through September after snowmelt clears the upper elevation. Clinton is your last fuel and food stop — load up. Cell service disappears shortly after you leave pavement. Dispersed camping is available in the meadows and along the lower FSR. This one rewards the self-sufficient.
