Trans-America Trail – Illinois Section
Midwest miles on the coast-to-coast dream
The Illinois section of the Trans-America Trail threads 280 miles of back roads between the Mississippi and Indiana, trading mountain drama for Midwest practicality. This segment runs mostly on gravel county roads and farm tracks through corn country, with occasional forested stretches around Shawnee National Forest providing relief from endless agricultural views. The route crosses the mighty Mississippi near Chester before winding through rolling farmland toward the Indiana border, following the TAT’s signature pink ribbons tied to fence posts.
Easy to moderate difficulty makes this accessible to stock high-clearance vehicles, though spring mud can challenge even seasoned rigs. Best tackled April through October when county roads aren’t soup. No permits required, but respect private property markers religiously — Midwest farmers don’t mess around. Cell service is generally good, and small towns provide fuel and supplies every 50 miles or so. Camping options include state parks and occasional dispersed sites. Not the most scenic TAT section, but essential miles for coast-to-coast dreamers.
