Pyramid State Recreation Area Dispersed Camping
This 19,000-acre recreation area offers primitive dispersed camping around dozens of small lakes created from old strip mines. Sites are informal — find a level spot near water and set up camp. The landscape is rolling hills with mixed forest and prairie restoration, popular with hunters during deer and waterfowl seasons. Several lakes offer decent bass and bluegill fishing. No facilities except vault toilets at select locations.
Access via multiple gravel roads off Route 127 and Route 13. Roads can get muddy after rain, especially the two-track spurs to lakeside spots. Spring through fall is best — winter camping allowed but roads aren’t maintained. Bring your own water and pack out all trash. Fire rings present at established sites.
