Weinberg-King State Park
This lesser-known state park offers 25 primitive campsites scattered through oak-hickory woods along the Kaskaskia River. Sites are basic — fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilets, but no hookups or showers. Peaceful setting with good fishing access and hiking trails through restored prairie. Park stays quiet even on weekends, making it solid base camp territory for hitting Crab Orchard or exploring the old coal haul roads.
Access via paved county roads, then gravel park roads that any vehicle can handle. Open year-round but water gets shut off in winter. Sites are first-come-first-served, $8/night for Illinois residents. Good cell service from Verizon, spotty for others.
