Beartooth Highway Extension
Swiss Alpine pass linking at extreme elevation
The Furka Pass to Gotthard Pass circuit links three of Switzerland’s most demanding high-mountain crossings through Uri Canton’s granite heart. This route climbs from Andermatt through the Furka’s 11 hairpins at 2429 meters, then drops into the Rhône Valley before tackling the Grimsel Pass at 2164 meters. The technical challenge comes on unmarked connector roads between passes — loose shale, rockfall zones, and weather that shifts from sunshine to whiteout in minutes.
Expert difficulty requires serious mountain driving experience and a capable 4WD with low range for 15-20% grades. June-September only when passes open; snow can close routes without warning even in summer. Carry chains, emergency food, and shelter — rescue is expensive and slow at altitude. The payoff? Glacial cirques, alpine lakes, and views across half of Switzerland from roads that test both machine and driver.
