Passo dello Stelvio Military Road

Europe's highest paved pass with 48 hairpins

Moderate

The Stelvio Pass cuts through the Ortler Alps at 2,757 meters, its 48 switchbacks clawing up granite faces that claimed countless Austrian soldiers during construction. You’ll climb through three climate zones from vineyards to glaciers, with the eastern approach from Bormio delivering the most punishment—12 kilometers of relentless 12% grades that separate pretenders from proper mountain drivers. The Dreisprachenspitze summit offers views into three countries, while the Tibetan-style prayer flags left by motorcyclists flutter against impossible Alpine backdrops.

This isn’t technical rock crawling—it’s high-altitude precision driving where overheating engines and burned brakes end dreams. Any capable vehicle handles the tarmac, but altitude sickness hits hard above 2,000 meters, and weather turns lethal without warning. June through September offers the only reliable window, though snow can close the pass until July. You’ll earn bragging rights on one of Europe’s most legendary mountain roads, plus access to some of the continent’s most remote Alpine camping.
