Gun Creek Road to Gun Lake

Chilcotin Plateau's hidden alpine gem

Moderate

Gun Creek Road cuts west from Highway 40 near Lillooet, climbing through sagebrush hills before opening into the vast Chilcotin Plateau. This 45-kilometer route follows old cattle trails and mining access roads, crossing Gun Creek multiple times as it winds toward Gun Lake’s crystal-clear waters surrounded by subalpine peaks. The road deteriorates significantly after the 30-kilometer mark, with rocky sections and creek crossings that demand attention.

Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD and good ground clearance for the creek crossings and loose rock sections. Best tackled May through October when snow clears the higher elevations. No permits needed, but pack extra fuel and water — you’re 100 kilometers from the nearest gas station. The payoff is spectacular: pristine fishing, excellent dispersed camping, and some of the most remote country accessible by truck in southern BC. This is what Chilcotin wilderness feels like.
