Duffey Lake Road (Highway 99)
Coast Mountains high pass with serious winter attitude.
The Duffey Lake Road cuts a spectacular line through the Coast Mountains, connecting the historic gold rush town of Lillooet to Pemberton via a high mountain pass at 4,400 feet. This paved route transforms from a scenic highway in summer to a white-knuckle technical challenge in winter, when avalanche zones and ice-covered switchbacks demand serious mountain driving skills. The road climbs past Duffey Lake’s turquoise waters and through some of the most dramatic alpine terrain accessible by vehicle in British Columbia.
While paved, this route demands respect year-round but becomes genuinely challenging from November through April when snow, ice, and avalanche danger make it unsuitable for inexperienced drivers. Any vehicle can handle summer conditions, but winter requires AWD/4WD, chains, and avalanche awareness. No permits needed, but check DriveBC for closures. The payoff is accessing some of Canada’s most spectacular mountain scenery and connecting two distinct regions via a route that feels more like a backcountry adventure than a highway.
