Wicklow Gap to Glendalough — Military Road South via Glenmacnass Waterfall
Rebellion road through Wicklow's wild heart.
The Military Road through County Wicklow was carved by British forces after the 1798 United Irishmen rebellion — a hard gravel spine pushed through blanket bog to deny the mountains to insurgents. The southern section from Wicklow Gap down through Glenmacnass Valley to the monastic settlement at Glendalough is the most dramatic stretch. The Glenmacnass Waterfall drops straight off the plateau edge midway down — pull off carefully on the narrow verge and walk ten meters to the lip. The road narrows significantly through the valley and the bog shoulders are soft; two vehicles passing in places requires one to reverse. Watch for sheep on blind corners at all hours.
This is a Moderate route — paved but narrow, exposed, and serious in winter when ice forms on the plateau section with no warning. Any capable vehicle can run it dry, but the tight bends and soft shoulders mean overconfident drivers in wide trucks have put wheels off the tarmac edge. No permit required. The Wicklow Mountains National Park surrounds the route — no dispersed camping in the national park core, though sites exist outside its boundary. Fuel in Laragh or Roundwood. Best run spring through autumn; the bog views in October heather are worth the trip alone.

Can a standard hire car handle this route, or do I actually need clearance?
In dry summer conditions a regular car can squeak through, but the road narrows, gets soft at the edges, and has rough patches that punish low-slung vehicles. High clearance is a real advantage in wet weather, which in Wicklow is most weather.
When is this route passable and what does winter do to it?
April through October is the reliable window. Winter brings fog that kills visibility on the blind crests, ice on the exposed bog sections, and occasional road closures enforced by Wicklow Mountains National Park after severe weather.

No permit or fee is required to drive the route itself. Glendalough at the southern end has a paid car park if you stop there — cash and card accepted — but driving through costs nothing.
What's the hardest section and what should I actually be ready for?
The stretch across open bog above Glenmacnass is the sharpest test — narrow tarmac with soft verges, blind rises, and fast local traffic that knows the road better than you do. Meeting an oncoming vehicle on a crest with no passing room is the real hazard, not the surface itself.
Is there anywhere to get fuel or water along the 18 miles between Wicklow Gap and Glendalough?
Nothing. No fuel, no services, no shops on the route itself. Fill up in Blessington or Rathdrum before you go, and carry your own water — the nearest reliable stop is Laragh at the end of the run.
