Sally Gap Military Road

Built in 1798 as part of the British military road network to control rebellions, the Sally Gap Military Road slices through some of Ireland’s most remote upland terrain. The gravel track winds between Glencree and Roundwood, crossing exposed bog and heather moorland at 500 meters elevation, with the iconic Sugar Loaf mountain dominating views to the east. The route passes the haunting Lough Tay, known locally as the Guinness Lake for its dark waters and white quartzite beach.

This is an easy to moderate gravel road suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though weather can turn brutal with zero shelter from Atlantic storms. Best tackled April through October when visibility isn’t shrouded in mountain mist. No permits required, but fuel up in Roundwood or Enniskerry as there’s nothing for miles. The reward is genuine solitude in Ireland’s largest upland area, with wild camping possible in designated spots and endless hiking access into the Wicklow Mountains National Park.
