Cooley Peninsula Carlingford Lough Mountain Circuit

Smugglers' paths through border country granite

Difficult

The Cooley Peninsula’s hidden tracks follow centuries-old smugglers’ paths that wound between British customs posts during the Troubles, threading through the Cooley Mountains above Carlingford Lough. The route climbs past the medieval ruins of Greencastle toward Slieve Foye’s peak, where granite outcrops frame views across the narrow sea channel to the Mourne Mountains. Stone-walled lanes give way to rough mountain tracks as you navigate through Ballymascalon Forest and around the base of Clermont Carn, passing abandoned quarries where granite was cut for Dublin’s buildings.

This is challenging terrain demanding experienced navigation and a capable 4WD for steep gradients, loose rock sections, and narrow passages between stone walls. Some tracks cross private land requiring landowner permission. Best attempted May through October when mountain weather is most stable. Mobile coverage is spotty but improves near coastal sections. The peninsula offers wild camping opportunities above Carlingford village, but check local regulations. This route delivers authentic border country atmosphere with dramatic coastal and mountain scenery few visitors ever experience.
