Ghost River Wilderness Area Access Road

Ford it or turn around — Ghost River is honest.

Difficult

Follow the Ghost River Road northwest out of Waiparous Village and things get real within the first ten kilometers. The Ghost River itself must be forded several times — crossings that sit knee-deep on a truck axle during snowmelt and drop to manageable ankle-depth by late summer. Past the main crossings, the route climbs through broken limestone and shale benches toward the Ghost Wilderness boundary, with side tracks peeling off toward Waiporous Creek and the higher alpine meadows. The scenery is legitimately dramatic — jagged limestone ridges, cold clear water, and almost no development. This is a heavily used local playground on weekends, so midweek runs are worth planning for.

Don’t underestimate this one. Those river crossings flood fast after rain, and recovery gear is not optional — winch, traction boards, and a buddy vehicle are standard kit. High-clearance 4WD minimum; a lifted rig with lockers is better. No permits needed, but a Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required if you access through Kananaskis Country staging areas. Camping is available at Waiparous Creek Campground and along dispersed sites inside the wilderness area. Fuel up in Cochrane — it’s the last services. Cell service ends at Waiparous Village.
