Kananaskis — Elbow Falls to Powderface Creek Trail Road

Shale ridges and creek crossings in K-Country's quiet corner.

Moderate

Powderface Trail (Highway 66 connector) runs from Elbow Falls deep into the Elbow Valley, crossing Powderface Creek multiple times before climbing out over a steep, rocky ridge to the Jumpingpound drainage to the north. The road surface changes from packed gravel to loose shale and embedded rock on the ridge section — a legitimate test of articulation and approach angle. The views from the Powderface Ridge crest looking west into the Elbow-Sheep Wildland are worth the drive alone. The creek crossings are shallow but rocky-bottomed, with the main Powderface Creek ford sitting at a wide gravel bar that catches out low-clearance vehicles on submerged rocks.

High clearance is mandatory; a capable 4WD with all-terrain tires handles it cleanly outside of spring runoff. Lockers or locking front differential are an asset on the shale climb. The road is closed seasonally for wildlife — typically November through May — so check Alberta Parks conditions before you head in. No permits needed but a Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for parking. Day-trip or overnight at one of the designated backcountry campgrounds in the area. Nearest fuel is in Bragg Creek or Cochrane. Cell service drops to nothing past Elbow Falls.
