Kananaskis — McLean Creek OHV Trail System

Calgary's backyard mud pit. Respect it.

Moderate

Forty minutes southwest of Calgary, McLean Creek is where southern Alberta overlanders and wheelers cut their teeth. The designated OHV area sits inside Kananaskis Country straddling both sides of the Elbow River and covers a web of mapped and unmapped tracks through spruce forest, open meadows, and creek bottoms. The main McLean Creek staging area off Highway 549 is well-signed and sees heavy weekend traffic from Calgary, but push deeper onto the creek crossings and the hill climbs east of Gorge Creek Forest Service Road and the crowds thin fast. Water crossings on McLean Creek itself vary from ankle-deep to hood-deep depending on snowmelt — the June crossings will sort out rigs real fast.

This is a true multi-difficulty zone — green-rated loops are accessible to stock SUVs while the harder black-rated lines need a built rig with lockers, good skids, and a winch you trust. Mud season in spring is legendary and brutal. Summer is the sweet spot. The area is heavily regulated by Alberta Environment — respect trail markers, stay on designated routes, and pack out everything. No dispersed camping within the OHV zone itself; established campgrounds at McLean Creek Campground nearby. A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for all vehicles. Cell service is spotty at best near the staging area, dead once you’re in the trees.
