Kananaskis — Sheep River Provincial Park South Fork Road (Alberta)
Bighorn canyon, river fords, Kananaskis edge.
The South Fork Road inside Sheep River Provincial Park starts innocently enough off Highway 546 east of Turner Valley, then tightens into a genuine backcountry push as you track the South Fork of the Sheep River upstream toward the Missinglink Mountain area. The road crosses the main Sheep River multiple times on low concrete fords — these are the crux moves, especially during spring runoff when the river runs wide and fast. Between crossings the surface alternates between packed gravel and exposed rock shelves. Bighorn sheep are almost guaranteed on the canyon walls; they’re why the park exists. The road corridor is closed annually from December 1 to May 15 to protect wintering wildlife.
Rated moderate but creeping toward difficult in wet conditions or high water. A high-clearance 4WD with all-terrain tires handles it fine in summer; lift isn’t required but it helps on the rocky shelf sections. No permit is needed, but respect the seasonal closure — rangers enforce it. Cell service drops out within a few kilometers of the highway. Fuel and supplies are in Turner Valley, about 45 km east. Camping is permitted at designated sites within the park; no dispersed camping in the provincial park boundaries. For a half-day adventure with genuine off-road character close to Calgary, this one delivers without drama.
