Kananaskis Valley — Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park Loop
Kananaskis backcountry at its honest best.
Pull off Highway 66 west of Bragg Creek and you’re already in another world. The Elbow-Sheep Wildland loop stitches together logging-era roads, old range trails, and creek-bottom two-tracks through some of the most underrated terrain in Kananaskis Country. Volcano Creek crossing is the gatekeeper — a rocky, shin-deep ford that filters out the timid early in the route. From there the track climbs past Junction Hill toward the Sheep River drainage, rewarding you with open ridgeline views and the kind of silence that costs nothing. The loop returns via McLean Creek OHV area, one of the few places in the province where you can legally play in the mud without side-eye from rangers.
This is a legitimate high-clearance route — don’t attempt it in anything less than a lifted 4×4 with a locker. Spring runoff turns Volcano Creek into a washing machine; late July through October is the sweet spot. McLean Creek has pit toilets and designated camping; the wildland section is dispersed. No permits required but carry a paper topo — cell service drops out completely past the Elbow Falls trailhead. Bragg Creek is your last fuel stop. Budget a full weekend to do it right.
