Great Eastern Trail Virginia Jeep Access Network
High country access to Virginia's wilderness
This network of interconnected forest service roads provides vehicle access to remote sections of the Great Eastern Trail as it winds through the Jefferson National Forest from the North Carolina border toward West Virginia. Forest Roads 656, 828, and 90 form the backbone of this system, connecting trail crossings at Sugar Run Gap, Whitetop Mountain, and Mount Pleasant while passing through some of the most pristine high country in Virginia. The roads thread between 4,000-foot peaks where wild ginseng still grows and black bears outnumber hikers.
Easy to moderate difficulty on well-maintained gravel roads suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles. A few creek crossings and steep grades keep it interesting without getting technical. Best driven spring through fall when the high elevation roads aren’t gated for winter. No permits required for the forest roads, with excellent dispersed camping opportunities throughout the Jefferson National Forest system. This route offers access to serious wilderness hiking and some of Virginia’s most remote backcountry without the drama of technical driving.
