Jefferson National Forest Forest Road 5014
Iron Mountain's gnarliest ridgeline challenge
Forest Road 5014 traces the knife-edge spine of Iron Mountain for 18 miles between Mount Rogers and Damascus, delivering some of the most technical terrain in southwest Virginia. The route starts innocuously enough from the Mount Rogers trailhead but quickly turns nasty as it climbs toward Whitetop Mountain through loose shale and exposed bedrock. Fox Creek Gap marks the midpoint where most folks turn around, but the committed push through to Damascus drops 2,000 feet through a maze of switchbacks, rock gardens, and two gnarly creek crossings that can run knee-deep after rain.
This is expert-level terrain demanding rock sliders, recovery gear, and serious driving experience. Wet conditions make it borderline extreme. Best tackled in late summer when water levels drop and the rocks aren’t slick. No permits but Damascus is your last fuel and supply stop. The reward is legitimate bragging rights and some of the wildest high-country views in Virginia, plus the satisfaction of completing one of the state’s most challenging backcountry routes.
