Sperrin Mountains Forestry Network
Gold rush tracks through forgotten mountains
Deep in the Sperrin Mountains, a maze of forestry tracks connects the scattered uplands between Plumbridge and Cranagh, following routes first carved by 19th-century gold prospectors who worked these hills until 1924. The network climbs through Sitka spruce plantations to reach Sawel Mountain, Northern Ireland’s second-highest peak at 678 meters, passing abandoned mine workings and the ruins of prospectors’ camps. Multiple stream crossings along Glenelly River and its tributaries add technical challenge, especially after heavy rain when these normally modest waterways become torrents.
Difficult terrain requiring experienced drivers and proper 4WD with underbody protection for rocky stream beds and rutted forest roads. Wet weather makes clay sections treacherous and water crossings dangerous – stick to summer months June through August. No permits but check with Forest Service NI for logging operations that close sections. Navigation is challenging with limited signage and dense forest canopy affecting GPS. The reward is accessing Ireland’s most remote mountain wilderness, with excellent wild camping near mountain tarns and unparalleled hiking into areas few ever see.
