Superior National Forest Forest Road 153 Boundary Waters Entry Point Trail

Gateway to America's last wilderness

Moderate

Forest Road 153 cuts deep into the Superior National Forest’s remote northeastern sector, threading through ancient boreal forest to reach Entry Point 75 on Seagull Lake. The narrow dirt track winds past towering white pines and exposed granite ridges, crossing several beaver dam washouts and rocky creek beds that’ll test your undercarriage clearance. Mile marker 8 brings you to the notorious Devil’s Elbow, a sharp switchback over weathered bedrock that’s claimed more than a few oil pans from overconfident drivers.

This is moderate territory requiring high clearance and patience—stock 4WD handles it fine if you take the granite sections slow. Best tackled May through October when the worst mud holes firm up, though black flies will eat you alive in June. No permits needed for the road itself, but you’re on the doorstep of America’s most pristine wilderness. Dispersed camping is allowed along the route, and you’ll earn solitude that’s getting harder to find anywhere else in Minnesota.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle FR 153?

Yes, any stock 4WD with decent clearance will do fine. The water crossings are shallow and the rocky sections just need patience, not specialized gear.

Is Forest Road 153 open in early May?

Usually not until mid-to-late May due to frost heaves and muddy conditions from snowmelt. October can see early closures depending on weather.

Do I need permits to drive FR 153 to the Boundary Waters entry point?

No permits needed for the forest road itself. Only if you're planning to enter the Boundary Waters Canoe Area do you need entry permits from recreation.gov.

What's the toughest part of this trail?

The granite ledge sections about 12 miles in where the trail climbs over exposed bedrock. Take your time and pick your line carefully through the boulder fields.

Any cell service once I'm on FR 153?

Zero cell service the entire route. Let someone know your plans since you'll be completely off-grid for the duration of the trip.
