Superior National Forest Border Route Trail
International border wilderness technical route
The Border Route Trail forest road system traces the Canadian border through some of Minnesota’s most remote backcountry, connecting the end of Gunflint Trail to Grand Portage State Park. You’ll navigate through dense boreal forest, cross multiple creek beds, and tackle rocky sections that’ll test your line choice. The route passes Rose Lake and multiple beaver ponds, with the real challenge coming at the Pigeon River crossing where high water can turn a simple ford into a recovery situation.
This is legitimate wilderness driving requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear. The trail surface alternates between loose rock, deep sand pockets, and muddy bog sections that can swallow a stock vehicle. Best tackled June through September when creek levels are manageable. No services for 40+ miles once committed, and cell service is nonexistent. What you get is absolute solitude in the Boundary Waters ecosystem and some of the finest wilderness camping in the Midwest.
