Shafer Trail Road — Canyonlands Rim to Potash via Island in the Sky

1,400 feet of exposed switchbacks off the rim.

Difficult

The Shafer Trail is how you get off the mesa the hard way, and it does not apologize for it. Built originally by cattle ranchers in the early 1900s and later improved for uranium mining access, this road begins just inside Canyonlands National Park at the Island in the Sky rim and drops 1,400 feet via a series of exposed, narrow switchbacks carved directly into the canyon wall. You’re staring straight down into Shafer Canyon the entire descent. At the bottom, the trail joins the White Rim Road and continues south through Monument Basin country to the Potash Road, eventually connecting to Highway 279 outside Moab — making a legitimate point-to-point run of about 25 miles from rim to pavement. The switchbacks are the main event: narrow, loose, with sheer drop-offs and limited room to maneuver.

This is a difficult route that demands genuine experience behind the wheel, not just a capable truck. The switchbacks are too tight for longer wheelbases without multi-point turns on exposed ledges — know your rig’s dimensions before you commit. High-clearance 4WD with lockers is the call; stock SUVs have made it but the pucker factor is real. No permit is needed for the Shafer Trail itself, but Canyonlands NPS entry fees apply. Best season is March through May and September through November. Moab is your fuel and resupply point. Zero shade, carry serious water.
