White Rim Road — Canyonlands National Park Loop
100 miles of canyon ledge road. No shortcuts.
The White Rim Road runs a full loop around the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands, sandwiched between the sheer Wingate sandstone walls above and the Green and Colorado rivers far below. It’s one of the most visually relentless drives in the American Southwest — you don’t get a break from the scenery, and that’s not a complaint. Key waypoints include Murphy Hogback, a nasty little climb with exposure on both sides, Hardscrabble Hill, and the Gooseberry Trail junction where day hikers peer down at you from the rim 1,200 feet overhead. The road itself is mostly packed dirt and sandstone ledge with a handful of technical sections.
Plan for 3 days minimum — 2 if you’re pushing hard and skipping hikes, which would be a waste. This is a permit-required route; book through Recreation.gov months ahead, especially for spring. Stock 4WD high-clearance works fine; aired-down tires help on slickrock. Carry all your water — there’s none on the loop. Cell service is nonexistent. Fuel up in Moab before dropping in. Best seasons are March through May and September through November. This is a bucket-list run — do it before it gets any more regulated.
