The real test comes at Shut-In Gap, where a 30-degree granite slab forces most rigs to take the chicken line around to the right.
This is expert-level territory that demands lockers, armor, and a spotter who knows what they’re doing. Spring floods make Ottery Creek impassable, so stick to late summer through fall when water levels drop. No camping allowed in the wilderness itself, but dispersed sites along Forest Road 2221 work for base camp.
