Chemin Forestier de la Zec Bas-Saint-Laurent — Gaspésie Interior Appalachian Plateau Road

Appalachian plateau roads above the St. Lawrence.

Moderate

The Zones d’exploitation contrôlée — ZECs — of the Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie regions manage some of the most accessible yet genuinely wild backcountry in southern Quebec. The forestry road network feeding into ZEC Bas-Saint-Laurent southeast of Rimouski climbs from pastoral St. Lawrence farmland into a rolling Appalachian plateau of spruce, fir, and beaver-flooded valleys. Key waypoints include the Lac Touzel access junction, the Rimouski River upper tributary crossings, and the high-country ridge overlooking the Parc national de la Gaspésie boundary. The roads are used seasonally by ZEC wardens, hunters, and sport fishers — surface conditions vary wildly and the ZEC office can give you current road status before entry.

Moderate difficulty overall, but specific sections — particularly after wet weather — turn into genuine slop that demands 4WD and proper tires. A stock 4WD with decent clearance handles this route in good conditions; a lifted rig with all-terrains handles it comfortably in any conditions. Access requires purchasing a daily ZEC pass, which is straightforward online or at the Rimouski ZEC office. Best season is late June through October. Fuel in Rimouski. What you get is a pocket of boreal Quebec that feels genuinely off the map — salmon rivers, moose wallows, and ridge-top views across the St. Lawrence to the north shore that almost nobody outside of Quebec hunters ever sees.
