Chemin du Lac Témiscouata — Bas-Saint-Laurent Wilderness Forestry Circuit
Clay crossings and moose country above Témiscouata.
Lac Témiscouata has been a travel corridor since Acadian settlers and Maliseet people moved these ridgelines centuries before a logging truck ever turned a wheel here. The forestry road network that fans out from Notre-Dame-du-Lac and Rivière-Bleue follows old portage lines through second-growth boreal forest, crossing numerous unnamed brooks and skirting beaver-flooded lowlands. The hardest section comes north of the lake where a series of clay-bottom creek crossings can swallow a wheel hub after any rain, and the loose shale climbs toward the New Brunswick border demand real traction on the way back down. Moose density here is among the highest in southern Quebec — drive at dusk at your own risk.
High clearance and 4WD are non-negotiable once you leave pavement at Notre-Dame-du-Lac. A stock lifted truck or dedicated 4×4 with all-terrain tires handles most of it in dry conditions, but a locker helps on the clay sections after rain. Fuel up in Rivière-du-Loup — nothing is available once you’re in the bush. Best season is late June through September; spring breakup turns those clay crossings into genuine traps. No permit is required for most forestry roads, but active logging sections have right-of-way rules — watch for loaded trucks. Cell service disappears within 10 km of the lake’s north shore. This is genuine Quebec bush driving, nothing glamorous, all substance.
