Chemin du Lac Témiscouata Est — Réserve faunique de Pohénégamook Wilderness Circuit

Clay-and-gravel boreal circuit above the Maine border.

Moderate

The forestry roads threading the high ground east of Lac Témiscouata and into the Réserve faunique de Pohénégamook are the kind of routes that don’t show up on tourist maps. You pick up the primary chemin off Route 232 near Saint-Marc-du-Lac-Long and push northeast through mixed boreal forest, crossing the Rivière Cabano drainage and climbing onto the ridge country that forms the watershed between the St. Lawrence lowlands and the upper Saint John River system. The descent toward Pohénégamook Lake is loose gravel over clay subgrade — when it’s wet, that clay turns to axle-grabbing slop in a hurry. Plan your timing accordingly.

This is a moderate route on a dry day and a legitimately difficult one after rain. You need a high-clearance 4WD with all-terrain tires and recovery gear — a winch is smart. No fuel between Saint-Marc-du-Lac-Long and Rivière-du-Loup, so top off. Cell service drops to nothing once you’re ten minutes off the highway. Zec access requires a valid Zec pass from the managing body; buy it online before you leave. Best window is late June through September — snowmelt keeps the clay wet well into May. What you get out of this one is legitimate solitude, consistent moose sightings at dawn, and the satisfaction of covering backcountry Bas-Saint-Laurent the way it’s meant to be covered.
