Yalakom River FSR to Shulaps Range Summit
Shale switchbacks above the Fraser Canyon.
Pull off Highway 40 north of Lillooet and the Yalakom River FSR drops you into a canyon that quickly earns respect. The route follows the Yalakom River northeast before climbing hard onto the flanks of the Shulaps Range — a dry, rocky spine of peaks that catches the last light long after the Fraser valley goes dark. Upper branches push into alpine terrain above 7,000 feet, with loose shale switchbacks, exposed ridgeline running, and views that sweep from the Fraser Canyon all the way to the Chilcotin. The Shulaps Copper Mine ruins sit mid-route and are worth a stop — rusted machinery, collapsed headframes, and a reminder that someone hauled ore down this same road decades ago.
Stock rigs will struggle above treeline — expect off-camber shale, narrow shelf roads, and no room for error on the upper switchbacks. Minimum is a capable high-clearance 4WD; a rear locker makes the loose sections much less exciting. Lillooet is your fuel and supply stop before heading in. No cell service once you leave the valley floor. Snow lingers on the upper elevations into late June and returns by October. Dispersed camping is plentiful in the lower valley sections, and the higher you climb, the fewer people you’ll see.
