Talladega National Forest Coleman Lake Road to Sweetwater Creek

Coleman Lake Road cuts a winding path through some of Alabama’s last intact longleaf pine forest, connecting a chain of remote fishing holes along Sweetwater Creek. The route starts near Heflin and follows old logging roads through rolling hills dotted with massive longleaf pines that survived the early 1900s timber boom. Key waypoint is the Sweetwater Creek bridge—actually just concrete pilings from a Depression-era WPA project—where the creek runs clear over granite bedrock and wild turkeys come to drink at dawn.

Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though the creek crossings can get sketchy after heavy rains. Stock SUVs handle it fine in dry conditions, but carry a shovel for the occasional muddy spot. Best spring through fall when creek levels are predictable. No permits required, dispersed camping allowed throughout the area. You’ll experience genuine Alabama backcountry without the crowds, plus some of the state’s best bass fishing if you pack a rod.
