Washita Battlefield Oil Patch Heritage Trail
Oil boom and battlefield heritage circuit
This network of section roads and old lease tracks connects the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site with abandoned oil well sites from the 1920s boom across the rolling grasslands of western Oklahoma. You’ll follow the approximate route of Custer’s 7th Cavalry through prairie that still shows scars from early drilling operations, passing rusted wellheads and concrete foundations where fortune seekers once struck black gold. The route crosses multiple seasonal creeks and provides access to original battlefield interpretive sites away from the paved visitor routes.
Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though prairie two-tracks can become slippery gumbo after rain. Spring wildflower season offers spectacular views but also muddy conditions. Summer heat can be brutal with no shade for miles, while fall provides ideal conditions for exploring both the battlefield history and oil heritage. No permits required for the public sections, but respect private property boundaries. Cell service is spotty to none, and the nearest fuel is 30+ miles away. This is a cultural heritage experience through authentic Great Plains country.
